Mid-Year Reading Recap

Hi folks,

I’ve met my reading challenge for the year. I kept it simple at just one book a month. As I’ve mentioned before, lowering my expectations seems to be the key to success 😜.

I did a quick review of Strangers and Limping Lady here.

See my review of Invisible Women:Data Bias in a World Designed for Men here.

I reviewed Hum here and Yesteryear here.

I gave Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators four stars. Based on my reads this year, if a nonfiction book has a colon in the title, it’s going to be fire. Catch and Kill is extensively researched and outlines the abuse of multiple women by powerful men in media, along with the systemic way the industry and the men in power tried to bury those stories. Journalists are so important to society. There’s a reason why totalitarian regimes go after the press.

Kin was the latest read for my family book club. It’s the tale of two women who grew up together in a small town, bound together throughout their lives by their mother wounds. The book is set in the American South during the Jim Crow era of the 1950s and 1960s. It is the first five star read of the year for me. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read it yet but I will say there are definitely choices the author made that upset me. I wouldn’t have been so affected by them if I wasn’t so heavily invested in the story. That’s the sign of a great tale!

It’s summer now, and all readers know this is our time to shine. Yours truly plans to be in the shade, reading more great stories. I seem to be on an upswing with my reading selections. Bring on the next five star read!

Have a great week.
