“Womanhood was a dangerous business if you didn’t get it right – pg. 169 “
Hi folks,
I am woefully behind on my Goodreads reading challenge for the year. Don’t give up on me yet. I always seem to pull through in the end. My last read was this 187 page book. Set on a fictional Caribbean island, the story is told from the point of view of the mermaid, the man that first spots her and the people she befriends on the island. It’s not your typical mermaid dreams of being human and sacrifices her voice for legs kind of tale. Without giving away too much, the mermaid was cursed and then captured and brought to the island against her will. She goes through a transformation on the island and so do the other main characters who interact with her. I love how it says right on the book that it’s a love story. It’s also a story about human nature, ecology and fate. It’s short but it packs a big punch. And, it got me out of my reading slump. I’d recommend it for anyone looking for a quick and thought provoking read.
